Life-Flight-Teams are called to transport those in need of critical medical care to an institution capable of managing their condition. On occasion, life-altering events can be prevented from ever occurring, or measures may be taken by both patients and medical providers to reduce the impact these events have. I wrote this book for two reasons, to enlighten those curious about the flight-nurse profession and to share with the public and those new to critical care some take home points from these medical emergencies. I am asked daily by both the public and those in the healthcare industry about my career as a life-flight nurse. My goal is to answer this question, at least in part, by sharing my more memorable experiences as a life-flight nurse, linking each story to a teachable event. Each story, except for the last, follows a basic format.
Setting - the events or patient symptoms leading to the need for emergency transport.
Everyday Language Of What Might Be Going On – an easy to understand, plain language explanation of what is going on medically with the patient.
The Flight Out and Game Plan - my thoughts and plans for the transport and/or events while en route to pick up our patient. Most of the stories are helicopter transports, but a few are by ambulance or fixed wing (i.e. plane).
The Transport - details of the transport with the patient in our care.
The Outcome - when known, patient outcomes during and after the hospital stay.
Take Home Points: - I believe the greatest teaching methods are through real life experiences. I have tried to relate each story to lessons that can be learned from the events. After each story, there is a section designated for nurses or emergency service (EMS) providers and one for the public. I have learned a great deal throughout my career and hope to share several key lessons with you in easy to understand words.
